ACL surgery is a procedure in which arthroscopy is used to replace a torn ligament in your knee.
The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is a band of tissue inside your knee joint. ACL gets damaged when it stretches. ACL injuries are common among people who play sports and during road traffic accident.
How ACL Reconstruction Surgery Is Performed
In ACL reconstruction surgery, a new ACL is made from a graft. There are two options for graft preparation :
- A portion of the patient’s own hamstring
- Quadriceps or patellar tendon
ACL reconstruction surgery is performed using minimally invasive arthroscopic technique. ACL reconstruction can be performed as an outpatient (ambulatory) procedure, in which patients can go home on the same day as their surgery
After procedure :
Progressive physical therapy after ACL surgery helps to strengthen the muscles around your knee and improve flexibility. Following the rehabilitation plan is important for proper healing and achieving the best possible outcomes.

Results
Successful ACL reconstruction paired with physiotherapy can usually restore stability and function to your knee. Recovery generally takes about one month.
It may take eight to 10 months before athletes can return to their sports.
